Below are some of our volunteer and service opportunities, and also be sure to check our ALL AGES page. If you don’t see something that interests you, get in touch and we’ll help you set up a custom service activity that matches your interests and talents! If your school schedule doesn’t line up with a listed opportunity, think ahead and plan to volunteer during school vacation or other days when school is closed.
If you want to participate, or if you’ve got questions or new ideas, please contact us today. We’d love to hear from you! Jim & Janis, 3GC coordinators
Join our Tech Help Club (Townshend)
Meet at Townshend Public Library on Mondays after school to help older adults choose, use, and maintain digital devices. You’ll also learn plenty while helping. We’ll show elders how to send a text message with a smartphone, set up a facebook account, or load new software onto a laptop. Demonstrate how you use your own device, or help create handouts with online safety tips for elders. Co-founder Janis will be the ringleader. We’re also seeking additional adult leaders. LGUMHS students will be able to take the late bus home after this activity.
Make friendly phone calls (Anywhere)
Make phone calls to a local elder who lives alone. A simple phone call on a regular basis can brighten the life of an isolated elder, and might even save a life if someone has fallen or had another kind of accident.
Join a yard work team (Newfane, and other locations)
Co-founder Jim will be your fearless leader as you tame overgrown shrubberies, uproot wild weeds, banish snow from walkways, or perform other valuable services for grateful old folks.
Stack wood (Several locations)
Help ANUFF stack cordwood for individuals who need assistance. This is a friendly group that gets together and helps where needed in the West River Valley. You must be able to tolerate snacks and a sense of humor!
Office help (Brattleboro)
Make photocopies and collate information packets at The Gathering Place adult day care center. This is an occasional opportunity which can be scheduled Monday-Thursday between 7:30 A.M. and 12:30 P.M. Also, a few times a year they need help preparing a mailing. This site is fully accessible, ADA compliant. Please contact 3GC about this opportunity, not TGP.
Bookmobile helper (Dummerston Center)
Help an adult volunteer who brings books to the senior luncheon at the Grange Hall in Dummerston Center on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. Carry boxes of books and get trained on how the program works.
Outreach for 3GC (Townshend, Newfane, and other locations)
3GC does not want to be the best-kept secret in the valley! We need your help to reach out and get potential volunteers signed up. What are your ideas about how to reach more people? We plan to do outreach at farmers markets and other events, schools, club meetings, senior housing, churches, etc. but if YOU have better ideas, we need your help as soon as possible.
Various activities and performances (Brattleboro, Townshend)
Elders would love to meet youth and do something interesting together in a supervised setting. Bring a spark into their day!
These opportunities happen on both weekdays and weekends at several elder housing and day care organizations. Wheelchair accessible.
Here are some examples of things you might do:
- read aloud
- play cards or other games
- perform music, solo or with friends
- recite poetry
- cook together
- do arts or craft project
- talk about a trip you have taken and show pictures
- bring in a piece of technology that you can show and explain
- interview a resident and write about them for the house newsletter
Music for luncheon (Newfane)
Perform music for older adult diners on the second thursday of the month. Sign up for one time or several. This meal is held at the Congregational Church in Newfane. This site has wheelchair access. Please contact 3GC, not the church.
Luncheon Helpers (Dummerston Center)
The Senior Solutions community luncheon is held at noon on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at the Evening Star Grange in Dummerston Center. Two to three teen helpers are needed to help prep and serve food and clear tables. This is a great friendly group of adult volunteers to work with. And, of course, you get to eat some darned good homestyle cooking. Contact 3GC to sign up for day(s) that work for you. And while you’re at it, recruit a friend or two to go with you!
Luncheon Helpers (Townshend)
Teens are needed to help at the Senior Solutions lunch for senior citizens which is held on first and third Thursdays at the Townshend Community Church (Congregationalist). Helpers will place serving dishes on the tables, enjoy a lunch provided by The Dam Diner, and then help clear the tables and wash dishes. The volunteers are needed from noon to approximately 1 P.M. You do not need to be available for every meal; sign up for the days that work for you. Please contact 3GC about this opportunity, not the church.
Check back often for new volunteer and service opportunities!
